Travel
Please check the regulations for entry into Italy here. If you need an invitation letter for your visa application please contact christoph.gadermaier@polimi.it
By plane: Milano is served by three airports:
Linate (LIN): the closest to the city, has its own Metro station.
Malpensa (MXP): 40 min by train to Centrale and Cadorna Stations
Bergamo-Orio al Serio (BGY): 1h by Bus to Centrale Station
By train: Italy has excellent high speed trains. Milano is well connected to major cities in France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany
By car: there are several motorways leading to Milano. However, on Sunday evenings and weekday mornings they routinely reach the limits of their capacity. On August 30 and 31, congestion is expected due to locals returning from their summer holidays. Access to large parts of Milano is limited to cars fulfilling emission regulations Euro 3 or higher for petrol and Euro 6 or higher for Diesel powered cars. For details see here
Getting around: The backbone of the public transport network are the five metro lines. Attention! The Green line is interrupted between Cadorna and Garibaldi stations, so please choose alternative routes. The conference venue is sub-five minutes walking distance from the Piola station on the Green Metro Line (M2, one station east from Loreto, one of the intersections between the red and green lines) and the Leonardo da Vinci/Politecnico stations of tram lines 19 and 33 (Click “conference venue” for a drawing how to get to the lecture hall). The easiest way to pay for your ride is to swipe your debit or credit card at the turnstiles (see sample image) both upon entry and exit (even if there is a free exit lane). Alternatively, you can buy rechargeable paper tickets at vending machines and newsstands inside the stations. For more details see here.
Accommodation: we do not give specific recommendations, since hotels close to our venue (città studi area) are plenty but small and will only accomodate a fraction of our participants each. We recommend early booking, especially if you plan to stay for the weekend following the conference, since rooms will be in high demand due to the Formula One Grand Prix in Monza.
Conference History
Flatlands beyond Graphene is a series of conferences, which has established as a platform for engaging exchange and discussions of the latest exciting developments on the theoretical modelling and experimental progress in the field of layered materials beyond graphene.
This exceptional event encompasses the forefront of advancements in synthesis, characterization, and theoretical modeling of these cutting-edge materials. Explore the vast potential of 2D materials and their applications in diverse fields such as electronics, energy storage, catalysis, and optoelectronics.
Having made its debut in Bremen, Germany, in 2013, Flatlands beyond Graphene has since traversed Europe, leaving its mark in Dublin, Ireland (2014), Ramat Gan, Israel (2015), Bled, Slovenia (2016), Lausanne, Switzerland (2017), Leipzig, Germany (2018), Toulouse, France (2019), the online edition in 2021, Lanzarote, Spain (2022), Prague, Czech Republic (2023), Wroclaw, Poland (2024), and now for the first time in Italy.
